Final report Nordstil: a robust anchor point for retail success

The stiff breeze of fresh design created an excellent atmosphere during the three days of Nordstil: 20,000 trade visitors from the whole of northern Germany and Scandinavia ordered the latest products for their businesses and received creative inspiration and valuable knowledge in their sectors.

With 970 exhibitors [1] from Germany and other parts of Europe as well as 20,000 visitors, [2] Nordstil is the ideal northern meeting point for the industry. 170 international companies, mainly market leaders from Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden, added flair, style and design to the trade fair under the Hamburg TV tower. Visitors were extremely pleased with the varied product range for both the home and garden, not to mention the high quality of the exhibitors.

"As before, Winter Nordstil demonstrated an important fact: it’s a vital order platform for northern Germany's retailers. This was clearly proved by the very high level of satisfaction among both visitors and exhibitors, coupled with an increase in the number of orders placed. Nordstil provides new inspiration for the creation of unique product line-ups, and its complementary programme is perfectly tailored to the needs of retailers. For the North, Nordstil, is the order platform per se,” explains Binu Thomas, head of Nordstil. “According to the German Retailers' Association (HDE), the high volume of consumer spending that we’ve enjoyed up to now has begun to tail off. However, this has had no negative affect on the considerable appeal of Nordstil as an order platform for the retail trade. Attractive products of the latest design will always find their customers,” confirmed Thomas Grothkopp from the Home and Office Retailers’ Association.

Exhibitors at the Winter Nordstil were very pleased with the increase in orders and the high quality of the buyers: They made excellent use of the trade fair, networking with new customers from the local area as well as motivating existing customers to place orders.

Johannes Berner, CEO of Gourmet Berner:

For us, Nordstil went extremely well this year. The high number of visitors was a welcome surprise for us. Visitors were both able and willing to buy, and plenty of decision-makers attended. So we ended up with an amazing number of orders which far exceeded our expectations. The Saturday was the best trade fair day for years, in fact since we started coming to Nordstil. This has been some real success for us.

Visitor numbers could have been a bit higher from our point of view. Otherwise it was a well organised trade fair and a lot of fun, and Hamburg is a really amazing town. We gained a whole range of new customers, which was super. We always like coming here and are very pleased with this year’s Nordstil.

We had a good and varied clientèle with plenty of satisfied customers, who just kept buying our belts. They could touch the products and saw that they were of an excellent quality. Such things are important for our visitors. Nordstil is a vital trade fair for us, it’s like our home base, and we were very pleased with the visitor numbers and the quality of the visitors. We also gained lots of new customers, from Rügen and the Eastern parts of Germany.

Nordstil is a firm fixture on our regional calendar. We enjoy coming, we've got a good team and professional customers. In fact, the number of new clients we get at Nordstil is always higher than at other trade fairs. Footfall on the first day was good, and we’re very happy how the trade fair has gone.

Success is all you need

Up-and-coming companies, creative ideas for your POS and stimulating live presentations and workshops: Winter Nordstil had a vast complementary programme for visitors, with exciting events that turned it into one of those special experiences. Many visitors made the most of the Nordstil Forum talks and presentations on subjects like Design and Innovation, Customer Communication and Sales Expertise. Practical tips were shared on motivating the customer to place orders, as well as setting the scene to show off the latest trends to their best advantage. Unusual ideas on Point of Sale design could be gained from eleven brand-name manufacturers in the Village, and the Northern Lights area provided plenty of inspiration with its innovative products from young designers. Visitors were also attracted by the Buddelhelden (Bottle Heroes), who were offering high-quality wines and spirits that could be sampled and bought in a contemporary design.

Time to relax

As the pace of life accelerates, so does the desire for rest and peace – in other words, relaxation than can only be found in your own four walls: This trend is called Slow Living, and it is mainly about shutting out all the stressful hustle and bustle from your daily life. Natural materials such as wood, leather, linen and basketware are a great way to create a calm homely atmosphere, along with well-defined shapes, cuddly blankets and attractive textures. Shades of rosé are not topmost in our thoughts when designing our homes, but that is about to change. This delicate colour is going to be the star in all its shades. The rather cute sloth was already very fashionable in 2018, and this will continue in the coming season. The same can be said of the flamingo – still a trendy motif which features especially on tropical designs, especially in summer. House plants don’t just improve the atmosphere; but they have also become an absolutely essential. However, the plants of the Urban Jungle don’t just grow in flower pots, they also add a perfect touch to your home as patterns on fabric, china and wallpaper.
