Environment & Sustainability

Messe Frankfurt's involvement in Environment / Sustainability features a wide range of ecological initiatives. Our priorities include energy and waste management as well as mobility, logistics and food services.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency

We continuously invest in the optimisation of our energy management. Through regular energy audits, we review existing processes, identify optimisation potentials and define new measures. With energy efficient technology and demand-oriented system operation in our halls, we reduce our electricity, water and heating energy consumption.

Renewable energy

By applying innovative technologies, we contribute to sustainable power generation. As part of a public private partnership together with citizens from the surrounding neighbourhoods, we have put two photovoltaic plants into operation. With a total capacity of 1,100 kWp these two citizen-owned power plants generate green electricity for up to 350 households.

Waste management

Waste disposal at Messe Frankfurt

The responsible use of resources includes systematically separating and recycling waste. Up to 90 percent of the waste that is annually generated at the fair grounds in Frankfurt is fed back into the material cycle. In addition, our waste consultants and GreenCheck brochures provide information to exhibitors regarding eco-friendly trade fair participation.

Train at Frankfurt's Main Train Station

A centrally located and well connected venue is our basis for sustainable mobility. With combined admission tickets, exhibitors and visitors can use public transport for free. By funding annual tickets, we also offer our employees a strong incentive to use public transportation.

For eco-friendly transportation on our fair grounds, we provide service bikes for our employees as well as bicycle-taxis for our guests during the fairs. With zero-emission vehicles and electric charging stations, we are making a statement for the future.

With an integrated logistics concept, we reduce the traffic volume relating to our events. Our Cargo Center bundles logistics services and increases the efficiency of cargo transport, thus, resulting in a significant reduction in traffic on the exhibition grounds and in the surrounding area.

Food services

Food services

Sustainability is a central issue in the food services sector. Messe Frankfurt's catering subsidiary, Accente Gastronomie Service GmbH, purchases food predominantly from local and regional providers. Wherever possible, we avoid using food containing dyes, preservatives and additives as well as disposable packaging.

The 80 or so catering outlets that provide meals and refreshments during our events only use reusable dishes and easily biodegradable materials.

Sustainability is a key topic for Messe Frankfurt's trade fairs in all sectors.
Many of our leading in-house and guest events set priorities in areas such as energy efficiency, water management, waste management, recycling and eco-textiles. Special events, conferences or other formats present sustainability at all trade fairs.

With Messe Frankfurt's leading trade fairs ISH and Light + Building we highlight topics such as energy efficiency and renewable energy. In China, we organise the Water Expo China + Water Membrane China on water resource management in cooperation with the government.

In addition, many of our 50 international textile trade fairs feature sustainability as a key topic. With the Ethical Fashion Show and the Green Showroom, we feature specialised events on sustainable fashion in our portfolio.
