03.04.2013 “Messe Frankfurt against Copying” receives Grand Award in US Mercury Excellence Awards

The winners of the 26th Mercury Awards in New York have been announced, and Messe Frankfurt’s “Messe Frankfurt against Copying” service initiative has received a Grand Award in the category ‘Campaigns – Non Profit/Public Affairs’. Thus the world’s first service initiative established by an exhibition corporation for protection against brand and product piracy is recognised as the best activity among the gold award winners in its category.

“This award is a terrific acknowledgement of our many years of commitment in the fight against product piracy and makes us very proud and happy,” says Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt. “With “Messe Frankfurt against Copying”,  we have been campaigning since 2006 to create a fair business environment by providing our customers with information and support in asserting intellectual property rights so that imitators do not stand a chance. We have a substantial interest in making sure that our customers are able to protect themselves against brand and product piracy and that in the case of infringements legal action is taken and sanctions are imposed.”

“The success of “Messe Frankfurt against Copying” has been striking: some 25,000 customers have benefited from the information on offer since the initiative was launched in 2006, exhibitors are better informed, and are usually most interested in getting down to details. The number of products seized by customs at Frankfurt trade fairs is also falling steadily – by as much as 95 percent at individual fairs,” says Kerstin Karotke-Preuß, head of Messe Frankfurt’s Public Affairs department, describing the impact of the campaign.

A central element in the range of services is an information stand at all of Messe Frankfurt’s own events. Here, contact partners from Messe Frankfurt and experts from partners of the initiative are on hand to answer questions about how to protect against brand and product piracy and advise exhibitors on what to do in the event of infringements. In urgent cases, an on-site emergency legal service offers exhibitors free initial advice during the fairs. The information provided by “Messe Frankfurt against Copying” includes the brochure “Protection against brand and product piracy” offering extensive information, advice on how to proceed in the event of infringements and useful contacts. To ensure its customers are comprehensively and well-advised, “Messe Frankfurt against Copying” works in close cooperation with official bodies and private organisations in the field of protection of intellectual property rights.

Partners of the initiative include the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs), the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department of German Customs, Action Plagiarius (Aktion Plagiarius e.V.), German Anti-Counterfeiting Association (Aktionskreis gegen Produkt- und Markenpiraterie e.V.), Enterprise Europe Network (Hessen Trade & Invest GmbH) and the Association of German Patent Information Centres (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Patentinformationszentren e.V. – PIZnet).

The prestigious international Mercury Awards have been honouring outstanding achievement in marketing and communications since 1987 and are named after the Roman messenger god Mercury. This year, around 700 projects from 21 countries were submitted. Entries were judged by the International Academy of Communications Arts and Sciences on the basis of their creativity, effectiveness and success. A jury of international experts honoured the most outstanding achievements among all participants in a total of 24 categories.
