Frankfurt low emission zone

Since 1 October 2008, the city of Frankfurt has had a low emission zone for motor vehicles. Only vehicles with emissions classification 2 to 4 may drive in the zone, and they must display an appropriate emissions sticker.  

Vehicles from Germany and abroad that meet the emissions criteria may obtain the necessary sticker from the TÜV-SÜD (the official technical inspection agency).

Traffic

The city of Frankfurt’s low emission zone is located within the motorway ring formed by the A5 motorway to the west, the A3 to the south and the A661 to the east. Low emission vehicles displaying the appropriate sticker can drive to Messe Frankfurt at all times.

Vehicles without emissions stickers can also drive to Messe Frankfurt; theyare permitted to drive to the West gate or the North gate of the exhibitiongrounds. These gates can be reached from the A5, either via the A648, Rebstockexit, or the Katharinenkreisel roundabout. Messe Frankfurt's Rebstock multi-storeycar park can also be reached from the Rebstock exit.

You are only permitted to drive in the low emission zone (areas marked in red) if your vehicle displays an emissions sticker. Driving in the low emission zone in a vehicle that does not display a sticker is a violation of the law that is punishable by a fine.

Purchasing an emissions sticker

Complementing the normal services offered by the TÜV Hessen in Frankfurt, the TÜV Service Center Frankfurt Rebstock, located at Am Römerhof 15, will offer extended Saturday opening hours starting on 4 October 2008, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a six month period, they will also sell emissions stickers on Sundays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The restrictions on vehicle access in Frankfurt am Main will be phased in as follows.  

  • As of 1 October 2008, only vehicles displaying a red, yellow or green sticker are allowed to drive in the low emission zone.
  • Starting 1 January 2010, only vehicles displaying a yellow or green sticker will be allowed to drive in the low emission zone.
  • Starting 1 January 2012, only vehicles displaying a green sticker will be allowed to drive in the low emission zone.
